The Township of Severn is committed to identifying and removing barriers, as well as preventing new barriers, for persons with disabilities.

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, S.O. 2005, c.11 (AODA) was passed by the Provincial Government as a means of ensuring that goods, services, facilities, employment, buildings, structures and premises would be accessible to all residents by January 1, 2025.

The AODA consists of the following accessibility standards Customer Service, Information and Communication, Employment, Built Environment and Transportation. All standards, with the exception of Transportation, apply to the Township of Severn.

Accessibility Advisory Committee

The AODA requires that municipalities with populations greater than 10,000, which includes the Township of Severn, form an Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC). The AAC must be made up of a majority of individuals with disabilities and are appointed for the duration of the term of Council (2011-2014). We wish to demonstrate leadership in working to create innovative approaches and solutions for an accessible community. Council appointed an Accessibility Advisory Committee to update our Accessibility Plan, report on accomplishments and act in an advisory capacity as required.

Customer Service

The Township adopted its Accessible Customer Service Policy and Procedures in October 2009. As a requirement of the standard, the Township is responsible to ensure that all staff, volunteers and members of Council are trained on these policies and procedures.

Multi-Year Accessibility Plan

Under the AODA, all municipalities must prepare multi-year accessibility plans that identify which actions the Township have used in the past year as well as future plans to identify, remove and prevent barriers confronting people with disabilities.  Our plan was prepared with input from our Accessibility Committee and Council.
