Fire Safety Plans

A Fire Safety Plan is designed by the building owner to identify the actions that should be taken by the occupants and building management in the event of a fire or similar emergency situation.  In addition, actions are identified which must be implemented and documented, where required, in order to maintain fire protection systems and assist in the prevention of fire on the premises.  The Fire Safety Plan therefore covers fire prevention, evacuation and emergency response.

A Fire Safety Plan is required in the following buildings:

  • Assembly, detention, care or care and treatment facilities – all buildings
  • Residential – more than 10 persons
  • Business and personal services – more than 300 persons
  • Mercantile – more than 300 persons
  • Retirement home
  • High hazard industrial occupancy where the occupant load exceeds 25
  • Medium hazard industrial occupancy where the occupant load exceeds 100 persons
  • Low hazard industrial occupancy where the occupant load exceeds 300.
  • All buildings 4 storeys and greater (including below grade)
  • Boarding, lodging and rooming houses – more than 4 persons
  • Children's custodial homes – more than 4 persons.
